How to plan a trip in an electric car across Europe
The definitive guide to travelling in an EV without range anxiety: from picking the right charger to booking a hotel with charging.

1. Preparing an electric car trip
Travelling in an electric car across Europe in 2026 is much easier than people think. The charging network has grown massively: with over 50,000 charging points in the country (around 15,000 of them fast DC), the chances of getting stranded are nearly zero if you plan correctly.
The key is planning. Unlike a petrol car where you can stop at any station, with an electric car it is better to know in advance where and when to stop. Not because chargers are missing, but because a planned 20-minute stop at the right moment saves an hour compared to an emergency stop at 5% battery.
2. Calculating real range
The WLTP figure declared by the manufacturer is a reference, not a real-world value. Effective range depends on many factors:
Speed
Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed. At 130 km/h on the motorway you consume about 30-40% more than at 90 km/h. In practice a Tesla Model Y Long Range rated 533 km WLTP covers around 350 real km on the motorway.
Temperature
Lithium batteries perform best between 20°C and 35°C. In winter (below 5°C) range can drop by 20-40%. In summer with air conditioning the loss is about 10-15%. Preconditioning the battery before leaving helps a lot.
Driving style
Sharp accelerations and late braking consume far more energy. Smooth driving with use of regenerative braking can improve range by 10-20%.
Battery health (SOH)
After 3-5 years a battery loses 5-15% of its original capacity. If your car is a few years old, use the VoltRoute SOH slider to get realistic numbers. Example: set SOH to 85% if your car is 4 years old and has 80,000 km.
3. The charging network in Italy
Italy has one of the densest charging networks in Europe, concentrated along the main motorways and in urban areas.

5. The optimal charging strategy
The best strategy for travelling fast in an electric car is based on a simple principle: short, frequent stops beat long, rare ones.
The 20-80 rule
Always charge between 20% and 80%. In this range the charging speed is at its maximum. Above 80% the speed drops sharply, the time to go from 80% to 100% can equal the time from 10% to 80%.
Don't wait until you're empty
Stop when you're at 15-25%, not at 5%. Arriving at the charger at 5% means driving the last 30 km with anxiety, and a cold battery charges more slowly. VoltRoute plans stops so you always arrive with a margin.
Make use of dead time
The perfect stop is the one you don't "lose": stop at the charger in front of the café, order a coffee, use the restroom. When you come back you've added 30-40%. With a 150+ kW charger, 15-20 minutes is enough to set off again.
6. Hotels with EV charging
For overnight trips, finding a hotel with a charger is the best way to optimise the journey. You charge overnight (often free or at a reduced rate) and leave in the morning with a full battery.
What to look for
Not all hotels with "EV charging" are the same:
• AC charger 22 kW: perfect for the night, full charge in 4-6 hours
• AC charger 7 kW: enough for the night if you arrive with 30%+
• Household socket 2.3 kW: better than nothing, adds 30-40 km in one night
• DC charger: rare in hotels, more common in nearby car parks

8. Tips from experienced EV drivers
Before leaving
• Precondition the battery if the car allows it (Tesla, Hyundai, Kia), a warm battery charges 30% faster
• Leave at 80% if you can, you don't need 100%, it's wasted time

On the road
• Drive at 110-120 km/h instead of 130, you save 15-20% energy and skip a stop
• Use regenerative braking to the max, downhill you recover energy
• Don't go below 15%, below 10% power drops and charging slows down
• Chargers with multiple stalls are better, less risk of finding them full
In winter
• Seat heating > cabin heating (uses 5x less)
• Precondition the cabin while you're still at the charger
